Back to the girl's website: She seems to know very little about what she's talking about, like, to the point that I have to wonder if she is actually in a sorority at all. I mean, in her rush story she has a photo of a group of people and comments disdainfully that she would have had people like them as friends were she not in a sorority.
I hate that people are getting rush advice from blogs like that.

We have two types of recommendation forms. A legacy rec and a general rec form. Nither of them are an automatic invite, we just look closer at the member and its just another way to know a little more info about them. I think as a good rule of thumb in life- you can never have enough recommendations and people saying good things about you.

Just wanted to add a comment about recs. I think a lot depends upon where you are going to college. From what I understand there can be a big difference between large greek schools in different areas of the country and how they percieve a PNM with a rec. I understand that at many southern schools it is pretty much a requirement (thought the schools greek advisors will deny this up and down and tell you that you don't need recs when you really, really do) But - if you have a rec at a lot of the major greek northern schools it means nothing, next to nothing or worse - the sisters can get a bit pissed off thinking some alum from some other school is trying to tell them what to do and they don't like it. Bottom line, try to find out about your particular school. I don't know about many schools but can give this info (and please other posters, correct me if I am even slightly wrong): You MUST have a rec to get into a mid level to top house at: UGA, Bama, Ole Miss, UFA and Texas. It's a BIG help at U of SC, Clemson, Illinois and Vandy. Makes no difference at Penn State, Purdue, Kentucky, Duke. Could annoy the sisters at U of MD, Villanova, Lafayette, Syracuse. (and I am only getting this by hearing what some sisters in some chapters at these schools say - by no means all sisters in all chapters)

I'm not sure why, but this made me LOL. I do get what you're saying though.
And what's UFA? (Oh I think I know - U of Arkansas- Fayetteville.)

With some exceptions, recs are necessary at Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Auburn.
I think a list may be dangerous though, because at some of the chapters that you list as recs being helpful, that can be interpreted different ways. A PNM might not realize that what that means at some of those schools is that you could get a bid, but some chapters will NOT extend a bid without a rec. So, your options are limited without one.

I would if we received a stack of 30 recs from mama's friends for some girl from Georgia.
If you want an edge at Maryland, get to know sorority members! You have all first semester to do that! (And obviously, don't do anything stupid.)
