I have heard of a program like this in New York. Maybe it's the same organization. They collect dresses from designers and stores as well as gently worn dresses and distribute them to girls. They also give the girls make overs. Some hairdressers and make up artists donate their services. It's very nice.

In Chicago it's called The Glass Slipper Project. It was great to see it on the list.

Denver APhi Alumnae host 7th Annual Prom Dress Exchange

The Denver Alumnae chapter of Alpha Phi holds a similar event and they seem to have great success with it.

Press release from 2004 -

The Denver alumnae chapter of Alpha Phi and Cherry Creek High School's About Hope4All, a student organization dedicated to community service benefiting children, hosted the 6th Annual Prom Dress Exchange on March 20, 2004 at the Marriott Denver Southeast. Young women were invited to attend to find the "perfect" prom dress for prom in exchange for a $10 donation.

"This event allows young ladies the chance to experience high school prom without the financial burden. Anyone interested in being involved can donate a dress for an individual that cannot afford to buy a new one," said Holly Brown, Alpha Phi Denver alumnae chapter marketing director. Women who selected dresses last year were also given the opportunity to bring them to the event in exchange for a new dress.

Mrs. America 1991 and Pageantry Magazine columnist Kristianna Nichols also offered hairstyling tips to attendees.

And their press release for their upcoming 2005 event is on their website:

Thumbs up

That's so neat to read about all these organizations that help out with Prom.

A good friend of mine is the junior class sponsor at her school and she does something really neat every year. There's a place in Scottsboro, Alabama, that called "Unclaimed Baggage" or something similar. During prom season, she usually goes up there about twice and gets dresses for about $40 each, if that much. She usually brings back about $300 worth of dresses, has them cleaned, and then has them available for the girls who may not be able to afford a prom dress.

Bumping because I discovered a new prom dress project in Austin to add to the list above sponsored by the Texas LoneStars. Project Princess is a service project of the Texas Lonestars of the University of Texas - http://studentorgs.utexas.edu/txlstars/

I hope you all will check out a project near you and consider donating to help a young woman go to her prom!

Chicago Suburbs Program

I am the chairperson of a Chicago Suburban project that stemmed from volunteer realtionships with the Glass Slipper Project of Chicago. Currently Cinderella's closet is a project of the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Coutnies, Inc.

These programs would be an ideal place to not only donate your clothing and prom items but for greek voluntarism opportunities.

I can assist organizations interested in working to set up programs.

Even though I didn't see my city in this list, I actually got tears of joy in my eyes, that there are women out there who care enough about high school girls! I can't even imagine being 16, and not being able to go to the Prom because I couldn't afford it - these groups are worth their weight in gold!! Bless you all!

For those women in the bay area, the princess project is collecting dresses until March 19th only... You can drop them off at any of the bay area Antrhopologie stores... In addition to Dresses, they also take accessories (purses, jewelry, wraps and shawls)...

Cool! This year, the Junior League of Toronto's New Member (Provisional) class is collecting accessories and new pantyhose for the Corsage Project.

The Corsage Project is getting most (if not all) of their dresses from sponsors this year.

In Cedar Rapids, the local pop radio station does it and it's called Gown Town.

It took place last Friday, and 137 dressses were distributed to young women. It doesn't seem like a lot, but every little bit helpes.
