Question Where should I go for recommendations?

Hello GCers!

I'm so excited that rush is this Fall for me! I was PMing this PNM and I mentioned possibly contacting my local area Panhellenic. Is that where I should go for recs?

Thanks so much for your help!!

Re: How should I get recommendations?

Which campus are you going through recruitment (i.e. rush) at?
Which NPC groups are represented there on that campus?
This will help us in providing advice!

Hey CutiePie!

Well, I haven't yet decided, but for now it's between UC Irvine and UC Davis. Here are the Panhellenic groups at each campus:

UC Irvine:
Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Phi
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi

UC Davis:
Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Phi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Alpha

Thanks for the help!!

In the South, the best recs come from people we know. Most alums can easily get a recommendation form online from the "sisters only" page on their sororities' websites.

Write if you want one for Pi Phi!

Hi Carnation!!

I was wondering, can actives write a rec? My friend from HS who is in a sorority offered to write me one, but I thought actives couldn't? Thanks!!

This varies. Some sororities will accept a rec from a member who's an active in another chapter. It can't hurt but just in case, I'd be sure to get one from an alum too.

Even if they don't accept your friend's rec, a letter of introduction certainly can't hurt.

Around here the local Panhellenic Alum Assoc. is supposed to write one for you, but they may not know you in the way that would present you in your best light.

If it' possble-contact some of the moms of girls who went through recruitment last year and see if they can give you some leads on alums. You may know more of them than you think. It has been repeated NUMEROUS times-if it's a competative rush go for two or even three recs. Will your Mom have time to help you with this? It is a real task.

The information you need to provide will not be complete until graduation. GPA-Class Rank but you can start preparing your resume' RIGHT NOW. Think how you want to categorize your accomplishments.

Be prepard to tell them the address of the individual houses OR the headquarters of NPC (depends on the set up) and tell them WHEN they will start accepting applications. Get yours in EARLY.

Have you made an appointmnt for your pictures? Here, they advise 2 pictures, one professional and one casual snap like in your yard. (Two mothers even suggested the color red...) DO WHAT IS THE NORM FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY! Just WAIT til you go though Newbie! EVERYONE will want DETAILS! You will get more than enough advice! LOL

When I was getting ready to graduate from hs, a sign was put up in our senior corner asking if anyone's mom was a sorority alum so we could find out who we could get rec's from. The sign asked for this info: who's mom, what sorority, mom's phone #, etc. Then, all the girls who were going to rush in the fall called the mom, asked for a rec, got it or didn't-and that takes care of some rec's right there.

Whoa, back up. Is anyone familiar with the campuses she is considering? I know that at my school, a reccommendation is nice, but it is very minor. Obviously you should get them, but don't get too freaked out about it.

Yeah, at my school, I never once saw a rushee come through with a rec, except for a couple of legacies! Make sure you need them before working too hard to get them.

I'm from a relatively big school, and I don't think recommendations are a life and death situation here. The rush application states that it is the sorority's responsibility to obtain a rec if one is needed (although I've never understood that), and I didn't have a problem getting invited back to houses without recs. BUT I was, in fact, cut from the sorority to which both my sisters belonged, and I heard later that that particular chapter will only accept legacies who have recs. True or not, I don't know...that particular sorority was low on my list anyway, so I didn't pursue the matter but maybe you should think about doing a little investigating to find out what each individual chapter wants. It couldn't hurt--and I would rather have a rec and not need one than need one and not have it.

I never saw a recommendation in my chapter. First select your college, find out what the policy is there, and then worry about recs. Good luck!
