Morning (Noon & Night) Sickness....

Ok GC Mommies...I've read all the websites and talked to the nurse about ways to help (the very wrongly named) Morning Sickness...and nothing really has worked for me so far.... I have been eating about once a day (and lucky to keep that down) and other then that it's been Gatorade all day... What did you guys do for your morning sickness....

Other question: How long before it went away?

What i ate that was tolarable when i had MS.... was plenty fo saltine crackers and rice cakes.

When i was able to eat i had Subway and mexican food. I couldnt stand chinese food at all. But i didnt have any real wierd cravings like some have but i had to have mexican food or subway.

well.....

I have 5 children (no ...er..yes..I am crazy and I had HORRID morning, noon and night sickness (hospitalized many time for hyperemesis). When I was first pregnant my doc described it as your body is so "excited about expecting" it goes a bit overboard on the hgc hormone which causes the morning sickness. The MS helps protect the pregnancy from toxic dangers (ie, by constantly purging I think

I found with each pregnancy, I tried to stay higher in protein as I could. Eat what would stay down. Each pregancy it was something different that would work. First pregancy was beef or chicken broth (salty seemed to help), second pregancy was V8 juice ...on and one.

Sprite and Compazine are a godsend!!!! Use them if you need it!

FYIW, my sister who has 3 children, had ZERO morning sickness (the BRAT!) as always, your mileage may vary!

Sweetie, I am sure you don't want to hear this... BUT... I am still sick and I'm almost 7 months...

I actually had to stay at home on bedrest b/c of MS from Oct. to Jan.

I do recommend STRONGLY talking to your doctor about Phenergan and Zofran. Zofran is like gold, and is just as expensive. If you have good insurance, ask for it. (I mean around $500 for eight pills w/o insurance covering it. Mine wouldn't cover it.) Phenergan is good enough to at least make things bearable. It's a LOT cheaper!

My advice on food:
I did well on cups of fruit (think diced peaches in syrup)
Jello!!! Saved my life
Mashed potatoes
Gatorade
Pediasure if you are vomiting nonstop and cannot keep anything down

Avoid anything with an extreme amount of milk or noodles... Trust me on that.

Eat whatever YOU feel like you can stand at the time.

I was sick until my 4th or 5th month (and still have occasional bouts, ESPECIALLY after I brush my teeth-eek!). I ended up losing 12 lbs the first trimester, b/c so many smells and flavors repulsed me. I'm nine months now (only 2 weeks and 6 days until my due date-woohoo!) and I've only gained a total of 8 lbs. I STILL can't eat mushrooms, chicken, and mayo (three of my favorite things normally).

What I could eat/drink:
Decaf hot tea
Pedialyte popsicles
V-8 Splash juice
Whole wheat bagels
Steak (Filet Mignon was the only food I really WANTED during that time)
Crackers
Dole Fruit Gels (jello cups with diced fruit)
Peanut butter

Good luck to you, and talk to your doctor. They can recommend a nutritionist who can work with you to figure out what might help with the situation.

You can get on the Zofran Pump. It delivers anti-nausea meds to you throughout the day. It is delivered under the skin like on your leg or whatever. It is really expensive though, so you would have to check with your insurance. It can be a real life-saver for women with morning sickness / all day sickness.

(edited to add: I have not used it, as I have never been pregnant, however my my mom is a Labor and Delivery nurse / Lamaze teacher, etc. and has told me I will probably need it if I am like her...she had raging morning sickness with all three of us! Her patients always say it was a lifesaver!)

What did I do for morning sickness? Just dealt with it. . .

NOTHING helped at all. The old crackers that everyone always recommended did nothing but make my mouth dry. I couldn't really eat anything until about 6 or 7 at night. I don't remember exactly when I began having morning sickness, but it only lasted for a week and a half! Here's the funny thing - I knew exactly when it ended, because it was about 10:00 on a Sunday night and I had a sudden craving for a grilled cheese sandwich, and my precious husband (bless his heart) got out of bed from a deep sleep and fixed it for me!

Hopefully yours will not last long. I wouldn't wish morning sickness on my worst enemy. Then again. . .

You might not want to hear this but... with my first pregnancy I was sick the entire time. I was still puking the day I delievered my son. I would puke all the time-- but the benefit was excellent aim. I can stand up and hit the trash can, toilet, whatever. I could even drive and puke into a cup or out the car window while driving.

The second pregnancy I was sick to my stomach all the time-- puked all but months 6-7-8.

I would eat peaches with the heavy syrup--the sugary syrup will coat your stomach. Sucking on peppermints seemed to work for me. Also sucking on ice cubes helped alot!

Good luck!!!!

Maybe I've studied too much embryology (been a neonatal nurse for 22 years.. and reading an embryology book will make you not want to take ANYTHING for those first 10 weeks) but even if they TELL you a drug is safe during the first trimester, try to avoid it unless you're dying... medical science is not perfect and anti-nausea drugs have backfired in the past (anyone remember thalidomide?).

Just remember... the nausea is a good thing-- it means those hormonal changes that are supposed to happen are happening. It sometimes goes away when you hit 13 weeks but sometimes it doesn't. The folks who don't get 'morning' sickness probably never get gastroenteritis either. Small, frequent meals... don't let your stomach be completely empty where those gastric acids build up but don't stuff yourself either-- 3 ounces of chicken soup might be okay but 4 oz wouldn't be. Saltines before you move your head off the pillow... and pedialyte probably tastes more palatable than gatorade. Herbal teas (esp green teas) are better than black teas and stay away from caffeinated soda. We keep the giant size bottles in the office of Tums for all our pregnant nurses

Hope you're feeling better soon and you have a healthy little legacy next summer!

Sorry, but it just kills me when a nurse tells people to eat saltines... I tried that and almost ended up in the hospital 3 times for dehydration before I was told to take Phenergan.

IMO, if you are really sick enough to feel the need for medication, then don't let people try and guilt you out of it. You have to live, too.

Do your own research... Ask your OB... Don't make your decision off of Greek Chat advice.

Welcome to the time in your life where you will get more unsolicited advice than you ever thought possible -- but don't despair...this prepares you for AFTER the baby when you will get even MORE unsolicited advice from people

FROZEN GRAPES -- seriously. Have your hubby/S.O./someone get you the seedless kind (green/white were the best for me, but we're all different). Put them in the freezer for a couple hours, and then suck on them. They were a lifesaver for me.

SALTINES SUCK! To this day (baby is now 18 months!) I cannot stand to even look at them. UGH.

And while this sounds completely nasty, I promise you that it really helped me a ton -- get plain seltzer water and fresh lemons and limes. Pour a fresh glass over a little ice, and squeeze a few lemons/limes into it -- sounds gross, but it really helped settle my stomach.

I just want to reiterate what dakareng said...... morning sickness is a good sign for you! While it sucks, and I too wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, it is a sign that your body is taking care of your little one.

Hope this helps! Oh, and mine lasted 13 weeks -- I also used the Sea-Bands available at Wal-Mart, drugstores, etc. and they helped a lot too -- have a nurse show you where to put them on though - at first I had them in the wrong place, and duh - they didn't help!

One day I actually woke up hungry....and then the GOOD TIMES started...what they say about 2nd trimester "hunger" (for non-food items that is ) was incredibly true. Those were the happiest 3 months of my life!

wow

I never realized there were so many moms or moms to be on gc!

I was sick 24/7 for about 5 months. I was also a fan of diced peaches in syrup. I also enjoyed sunkist and orange tic tacs...don't know why! It was very dificult to stay hydrated, so make your very best effort to drink all you can. I made a couple of trips to the hospital with cramping due to dehydration. Congrats and take care!

I lost my baby at 4 1/2 months. I'm ok with it now and looking forward to the future. BUT, I must say, I had the most horrific MS between months 2 and 4. I really found the cold things helped. The suggestion about frozen grapes would probably have worked for me. I kept a washrag on me at all times because I could just put some water on it and slap it on my head. I sucked on ice and all sorts of things.

I also lost a bunch of weight in the short time I was pregnant, but came out with a lot of experience! LOL! I seriously would eat ANYTIME I wasn't nauseated. The rules of mealtime went out the window! It was so infrequent that I could hold anything down that I went ahead and ate as often as possible. I found that extra sweet things and dairy products KILLED me!! I stuck with fruit and some veggies.

WEIRD CRAVINGS: Before I realized I was pregnant, I started buying Fruit Loops in bulk! When I found out I was preggo, I knew why!! Also, and this is a bit sick...I had a dream one night of a peanut butter and tuna sandwich (both of which I like SEPARATELY!) Well, the next day, I couldn't get it off my mind, so I indulged myself. It was delicious, but it did make me sick! Thinking back, I was a MONSTER!! LOL! I've tried peanut butter and tuna since then and it is absolutely awful!

This was me. At about 7 1/2 months I could eat turkey sandwiches, bagels, egg white sandwiches and rice. I was in heaven. Around eight months I could eat spaghetti o's but they gave me the worst heartburn. Even after I had my baby I still had food adversions. I didn't eat normally until he was about 4 months old. Pregnancy through my body for a loop!

Cosign on all of the above. Melon cubes and watermelon were good too. It takes time but MS is a very good thing. Your body is doing what it's supposed to do to protect your little one.
