hey all http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Nope we don't have a house either, out here in MD, it's kinda aganist the law for any sorority to have a house, it's the brothel law. I know some locals and some national sororities, use certain floors in dorms and stuff like that http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Hope that helps

Hey guys! I just have a quick question about being a local in the States - So you guys have houses? Is it expected that you will have a house? Because here - no house, we are not even close since we have only been around for a couple of years, and have no headquarters to kind of help us out. I am just interested to know if locals in Canada and the United States are the same! Thanks~! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

None of the GLOs at my university had houses, local or national. I think it is less common for locals to have houses, however, there are some locals that have been around longer than many national GLOs. There's a pretty good chance these locals would have houses, I think.

All of the nationals have houses- most of them on campus, but a few are off. There is one local fraternity that doesn't have a house, and we are the only other local (a sorority). Next year some sisters and I are renting a house that we know the landlord of and it's ok with him to make it a sorority house. The only thing we have to do is get it approved through the university first (I'm not sure what their procedures are yet). Hopefully it will all work out http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif)

Just thought I would add this:

All GLOs at my university had "frat rooms" (the colloquial term). These were meeting rooms located in the basements of 2 of the dorms. It was basically your chapter's room to use as you please (Ahem, you had to have permission to serve alcohol, and follow university regulations. And hazing is not allowed.) My chapter is finishing up the painting of our crest on one wall, there is a painting of our chapter "logo" on the opposite wall, and recent composite photos are hangin on the wall. They are also looking into purchasing some small but nice glass cases to showcase some of our original chapter items (charter, photos, etc.). We were lucky enough to have a farily large room. Some of them are tiny!

Hey guys! Thanks for writing! The thing is: we have been solicited by some girls in the States to be a Iota Beta Chi - Beta Chapter and we were not sure if in the US it is the same in Canada where we don't have the funding for a house! If we want to have a meeting even at the Student Union Building we have to say it is a "study group" because they do not recognize greeks! If you have any thing else that you think might be different from us that would be great! I wouldn't want these girls to think that they might be getting something that we might not be able to offer them!

We used to have a house but haven't had one for the past year and a half. We will be getting another one shortly...hopefully at the beginning of the summer. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
